School of Dentistry Opens
The £5.5m extension to the University of Sheffield's School of Clinical Dentistry was officially opened on Friday 25 April 2008 by Dr Mark Walport, Director of the Wellcome Trust.
The four-storey extension links the existing school with the neighbouring Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and provides new research laboratory space for both parties.
The extension was a joint venture between the University of Sheffield and the NHS. It has been a challenge to produce a design which is sympathetic to both the brick built structure of the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and the University's 1980's School of Dentistry, whilst taking into account the level differences between the two buildings.
Through careful choice of cladding system and a strong linear design we have managed to create a visually exciting structure between the two existing buildings whilst at the same time, addressing all of our client's requirements in terms of space and function within a confined area.
Commenting on the scheme Professor Ian Brook, Clinical Director at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, said: "The new wing is important in the development of the Charles Clifford Hospital as a world class Dental Hospital providing specialist care to patients and clinical placements for dentists in training. The research facilities will underpin our clinical activities giving patients access to the most up to date care. Movement of offices and management from the Charles Clifford to the new wing enables us to redesign and improve facilities for patients and clinical teaching in the Hospital, which is being refurbished at a cost of £7million with completion in 2009."
