Peter Hughes Wins RIBA Competition
Peter Hughes, a Part 1 Architectural Assistant at our head office in Sheffield and graduate from the University of Sheffield, entered a competition for architecture and design students to design a public space to minimise the effects of a terrorist attack. The competition was launched in partnership by the RSA, the Home Office, the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) and RIBA.
Initially starting with 92 entrants, Peter successfully made it into the final 8 short-listed for interview. Peter was announced the winner at the award ceremony on the 7th May at the Home Office in London.
The Brief asked for a ‘phoenix from the ashes' in reply to the callous attacks upon the citizens.
Peter focused on creating a peaceful, safe and welcoming environment. This approach took the form of ‘The Dove and Olive Branch'.
Security Minister Lord West said;
"I want to congratulate Peter... In particular, I want to draw attention to the innovative work that Peter has done.
His design integrated counter terrorism measures into a redeveloped social space. This approach is to be encouraged for the next generation of architects and designers in order to better protect our crowded spaces."
Chief Executive of the RSA, Matthew Taylor said:
"Design Directions challenges designers to use their skills in dealing with disorder, complexity and intractable social issues.....Peter Hughes's solution combines inspiring symbolism with an ingenious, tactical organisation of space."
