'Very Good' BREEAM rating awaded to South Cheshire College
The new build campus at South Cheshire College, designed by Jefferson Sheard, has been awarded a ‘Very Good' BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating. This rating was a requirement set out by the College as part of its aspirations for a sustainable new campus with reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions. Recognition from BREEAM through the achievement of this rating validates our practice's ability and success in sustainable design. The new scheme maximises the potential of the site, creating environmental benefits - both in terms of energy efficiency and conservation of natural resources. Our team incorporated many sustainable measures and renewable technologies to ensure that the carbon footprint of the College is minimal. These environmentally-friendly features include naturally ventilated teaching spaces - by way of actuated windows connected to a BMS (Building Management System) - and light shelves, positioned at the window midrail, which maximizes natural day lighting by reflecting light onto the ceiling of the class space whilst also acting as brise soleil to help regulate temperature. Green and brown roofs on top of the building have also been created to preserve a natural environment, while rainwater is collected and stored in a rainwater harvesting tank for recycling. Further sustainable features incorporated in the design are: The new £75 million flagship campus houses facilities such as hair and beauty salons, a 300-seat theatre, a Learning Resource Centre, four cafes, a restaurant and brasserie, a sports hall and an all weather outdoor pitch and is on course to open its doors to students in September.
