A Green Award Magnet! The Think Low Carbon Centre

Barnsley College’s new Think Low Carbon Centre, designed by Jefferson Sheard Architects, has been named winner of a Green Apple Award for Building and Construction.

Jefferson Sheard and Barnsley College representatives will collect their trophy at The House of Commons on 12th November. The National Green Apple Environment Awards are one of the few campaigns accredited by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, acting as a feeder for British entries into the European Business Awards for the Environment.

This knowledge transfer hub for sustainable construction and renewable technologies is the first of its kind in Yorkshire and the Humber. In a series of triumphs for the new facility, the Think Low Carbon Centre has also has made the shortlist for a 2012 Green Gown Award in the Construction and Refurbishment category.

The Centre has already won the Sustain Magazine Award for Energy following its official opening in 2012 by Lord Redesdale and Channel 4’s Restoration Man George Clarke and is looking towards a highly successful future.

Wendy Bussey, Manager and champion of the Think Low Carbon Centre, said:  “This is great news for the Think Low Carbon Centre and we are all extremely proud to be associated with such a fantastic building. The award formally recognises the efforts of all those involved in the design and construction of the Centre and celebrates what is possible when energy reduction is at the heart of a design brief”

The Think Low Carbon Centre is one of a series of buildings designed by Jefferson Sheard for Barnsley College, including the impressive new main campus (completed in 2011) and a new Performing Arts Centre (currently under construction).

As Jefferson Sheard and Barnsley College work together on other projects, they have their fingers crossed for the Think Low Carbon Centre as it enters Stage 2 of the race to win a Green Gown Award!

The project attracted a £2.75m investment from the European Regional Development Fund. This was through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-2013, with the remainder of the project funded by the College.
