Jefferson Sheard have been appointed to convert a Grade II listed former wire mill in Huddersfield into a state-of-the-art healthcare facility with administrative offices. The £9 million development will provide over 200,000 outpatient appointments each year, and is the first of a number of projects to be undertaken by the Pennine Property Partnership, which will provide new accommodation for the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust across the entire region.
The Penine Property Partnership brings together Henry Boot Developments with the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in a joint venture to enable the Trust to reinvest in new health care related facilities without the need to commit to additional scarce capital funding.
Acre Mill is considered to be of architectural and historical interest, and the 1000 sqm design will transform the four storey building into new centralised outpatient facilities, freeing up additional space in the nearby Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for in patient care. A new external staircase and lift tower will provide improved accessibility for users, and will be created using modern materials which complement the existing stone mill building.
The designs include proposals for a new ecological pond, which will enhance the local surroundings and replace the two existing mill ponds which had become contaminated and structurally unsound. Construction works will be sensitive to the ecology of the site, avoiding disturbances to any surrounding wildlife while the building is on-site.
Planning permission and listed building consent was granted for the project in November 2012 and construction is now being carried out by Henry Boot Construction, with completion due by summer 2014.
