Peterborough Regional College

“The new Fisher Building is a fantastic asset to our College facilities. We are very pleased with the work of Jefferson Sheard who have been extremely efficient and helpful to work with to ensure the project was brought in under budget. We have invested £1.3 million on this new facility and the new workshops will allow us to increase our capacity to accommodate more students. It will also enable us to deliver the best experience possible for our students in preparation for university or a career in the art & design industry. The extra brickwork facility will assist us in providing even more skilled workers for the local market”

Requirement:

The brief from our client, Peterborough Regional College, required us to use cost effective methods to create an inspiring and uplifting Art and Brickwork Workshop building that is also accessible to students with learning difficulties and disabilities

Our solution:

We focused our design concept on the three key features of Structure, Colour and Light in order to address the need for the building to inspire its students.

  • A portal steel frame was used as a cost effective structural solution to divide the building into two high blocks and one low entrance block, giving the building its distinct form.
  • Colour is something we consciously incorporated from the outset; we used the College's corporate colours on the building facade to give it a distinct image, and used colour to identify it from other buildings within the College campus.
  • In order to make the most of natural daylight and soften the appearance the design incorporates glazing, and in turn, solar shading to control the strength of light.
  • The use of brick features heavily in order to reflect on the use of the building as a Brickwork learning environment.
