Sheffield College, Hillsborough site
“The college is delighted with the finished building which was completed on time and within budget. Equally important was the working relationship with JSA - their consultation with the staff resulted in a building that is not only superbly fit for purpose, a visually stunning building which will increase the profile of the college, but also that staff who have relocated to the new building feel like they 'own' it.”

Requirement:
Our client wanted an adaptable space that they could re-shape as the college evolved. It also needed to accommodate two relocating college sites for a greater catchment area and a greater visibility and presence, on a difficult corner site away from the main road. And there was a very tight budget to work to...
Our solution:
- Set back from one of the city's main arteries, and on a corner site, we created a striking glass façade, facing out at an angle and visible from the main road between buildings to give the college the visibility they wanted.
- Glass and steel atria keep the building naturally light throughout, and timber finishes give the building warmth.
- Split into four wings running from the main atrium, the layout divides the quieter areas of the college (for business and IT students) from the studios and labs that generate more noise.
- The college uses a natural ventilation system of layered glass and an acoustic louvre so that even close to heavy traffic, windows can be opened.
- Two courtyard areas between wings create spaces for the horticulture students to grow and plant.
- The courtyards and roof terraces add much needed social and relaxation space for students and staff.
- The scheme was based around expectations of the future growth of the college to accommodate change and development.
