Requirement:
Henry Boot Developments in partnership with South Tyneside Borough Council wanted to redevelop ‘brown field' sites totalling 9 acres in South Shields Town Centre with a retail centre and leisure centre complex that would have real presence. With this in mind we set out to work beyond the boundaries of traditional retail unit design and create something with movement and colour which announced the regeneration and extension of the town's retail heart.
Our solution:
- The centre incorporates 4650sq metres of supermarket space, 3720sq metres of non-food retail space and safe guards the potential for a future leisure centre development and a diner / restaurant.
- Our client was keen for a bold contemporary feel that would visually impact on the area around it, becoming a significant part of the townscape, so we designed exterior features and the buildings form and mass to bring colour and shape to the centre's immediate surroundings. This is achieved without a departure from the retailers brief to provide regular rectangular shaped unit plans.
- A dramatic wave form roof creates interest and a dynamic style which is visible from the nearby elevated Metro Line and together with a mesh of flags and masts ushers visitors in with a colourful, bright reminder of the town's nautical history.
