Requirement:
British Land Plc owners of Meadowhall, Sheffield's landmark shopping centre, proposed to refit the interior malls and at the same time took the opportunity to add more units and a new mall to an original double height supermarket space. We worked in partnership with British Land and concept designers Benoy to complete the build and fit out of this project to create as much new retail space as possible without incurring the need to request new planning permissions.
Our solution:
- We added mezzanine flooring to the double height space, creating a new atrium with a fully glazed roof and in effect, opening a whole new mall to retailers and shoppers.
- The space creates 12 new medium and large units in a modern, clean, bright shopping space. Contemporary materials such as frameless glass and granite cladding are used throughout in exciting and innovative ways.
- The mall ends with a dramatic cantilevered and curved feature staircase flowing into a new circular atrium, allowing natural light through to the ground floor.
- Use of a combination of double height and mezzanine floors and very carefully controlled design brings variety to the layout and makes best use of the available volume, so that the client did not have to obtain new planning permissions.
- The works also comprised an extensive overall of the mechanical and electrical systems including the provision of air conditioning to all of the public malls/spaces as well as new lighting and control solutions which required detailed design and co-ordination.
- All works were undertaken whilst the centre remained operational over a 3 year period and were delivered on time and budget despite extensive flooding in June 2007.
