“LSP is a state of the art interchange that is breaking new ground, not just nationally but internationally. It is unique, fit for purpose and is pioneering new forms of sustainability in transport infrastructure. It’s a fantastic example of what can be achieved through partnership working, innovation and imagination and we’ve set a standard which has now been recognised nationally and one that we hope that others within the transport industry and elsewhere will emulate.”

Requirement:
Merseytravel wanted a multi-modal transport interchange with an extended mainline station that would combine two small, local stations, to serve residents outside the city with direct travel routes overcoming the need to travel into the city to get out again. It brings together bus, rail and road access conveniently, and will increase local use of public transport. Already technically challenging, we created something absolutely sustainable too.
Our solution
- The passenger response has been very positive, with usage of the new facility much higher than anticipated.
- Our interchange design connects the relocated Garston station, and creates easy links for all to rail, park and ride, bus and tram services, and includes a taxi rank. It provides much improved direct links with Liverpool John Lennon airport too.
- The design is light and open thanks to the use of glazing throughout - visitors can see right through the building from one side to the other, so there's a great feeling of openness and security.
- Sustainability was key to our solution too - one of the key features is our beautiful recycled aluminium roof.
- We've also used photo-voltaic glass panels throughout for the floor to ceiling glazing, to generate electricity and to naturally shade visitors.
- Rain water is collected for re-use, and the interchange uses geothermal heating, cutting costs and environmental impact.
- The whole scheme is designed to accommodate the forecasted growth of the interchange, with plenty of surrounding space and the capacity to add-on as required.
- The scheme included a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing station platforms to bring it into line with the new facilities. The subway connection to platforms has been replaced with a glazed overbridge with lifts to create safer, more comfortable and accessible routes for passengers.
"What a wonderful facility Liverpool South Parkway is for the people of Liverpool and beyond. It's fantastic to see facilities such as this...it's an impressive example of how it should be done."
